
Wouter Den Haerynck
Wouter Den Haerynck ( °1962) obtained his law degree magna cum laude from Antwerp University in 1985. He was granted a scholarship form the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst which allowed him to study German law in Tübingen and Düsseldorf. In 1986 he was a trainee from Dr. Dieter Raabe in Hamburg.
In 1987 he was part of the Young European Lawyers’ Scheme of the British Council, allowing him to study English law at King’s College, London. He continued his education in London first as an intern of Yvonne Baatz (Clifford Chance), followed by an internship with Bernard Eder, QC. (Essex Court).
After finishing his military service, he was granted a Rotary Foundation Scholarship, allowing him in 1990 to obtain an LLM in Admiralty (with honours) at Tulane University, USA.
Wouter Den Haerynck has entered the Antwerp Bar Association in 1987 (trainee of Marc Huybrechts) and in 1992 he became a partner of the law firm Elegis - Huybrechts Engels Craen and Partners, where he headed its international trade and transport department until 2024. Since 2017 he is also a member of the Brussels Bar Association.
In 2014 he was the co-founder and chief editor of the Journal of International Trade – and Transport Law. He has given lectures on a regular basis at the Antwerp University and served as a speaker or moderator on several seminars and conferences. He published several articles on various legal topics, including insurance law, maritime law and contract law. Since 2023 he is also vice-president of the Belgian Maritime Law Association.
Wouter Den Haerynck is a commercial lawyer and argues cases in 4 different languages (Dutch, French, English and German), both in court and in arbitration, including at the Nato Tribunal (Brussels) and at the Peace Palace (The Hague). His clients include major insurance companies, p&I clubs, banks, multinationals, public authorities, as well as foreign and local companies and individuals. He also gets appointed as arbitrator.
